How to Load a Barbell
To find plates per side: subtract the bar weight from your target, divide by 2, then break that number into available plate denominations starting from the largest.
Example: 225 lbs target, 45 lb bar. Per side: (225−45)/2 = 90 lbs. That is two 45-lb plates per side.
The standard Olympic barbell weighs 45 lbs (20 kg). To reach a target weight, subtract the bar and divide the remainder by 2 to get the weight per side. Then find the combination of plates that equals that per-side weight using the fewest plates.
Standard plate denominations: 45, 35, 25, 10, 5, 2.5 lbs (or 20, 15, 10, 5, 2.5, 1.25 kg). To load 315 lbs: (315 − 45) / 2 = 135 lbs per side. Loading: one 45 + one 35 + one 25 + one 10 lbs = 115 lbs (not enough). Correct: three 45s per side = 135 lbs. Load heaviest plates innermost, closest to the bar collar.
For metric/competition barbells (20 kg), subtract 20 kg and divide by 2 for per-side weight in kg. The 20 kg bar is used in IPF competition; most commercial gyms use 45 lb bars. Confirm your bar weight before logging.
Quarter-pound microplates (0.25 lb / 0.125 kg) allow smaller increments than the standard 2.5 lb jump. Useful for upper body lifts where the 5 lb total jump (2.5 per side) can be too aggressive for slow-progressing movements like overhead press.
